RDOWS UPDATED COMPILATION OF BANNED/RESTRICTED DOG BREEDS ã
The following list contains dog breeds, in alphabetical order, that are either banned from ownership, or restricted so as to make ownership more difficult than owning other breeds, in legislation either passed, proposed, or tabled in venues throughout the United States of America. The breeds are listed by name exactly as they appear in legislation. Redundancy, or misnaming is due to the wording of codes, and/or ordinances. Some breeds are named specifically, some breeds are included by physical description. All dogs are subject to being named.
Dog ownership is under a barrage of legislation that threatens its very existence. The chilling fact is that our dog laws in the United States of America are riddled with misinformation, urban myth, and blatant lies. Based upon the egregious fantacies of breed specific legislation, it does not give us much hope for the rest of America's laws beyond of the realm of dog legislation. We must ask ourselves, and our legislators if the rest of our laws are so horrifically flawed.
Breed specific legislation (BSL) sets a legal precedent that empowers the enacting body to add any or all other breeds of dogs, or domestic species, with no further public notice. Some breeds are included in so-called "pit bull" bans or restrictions. There is no breed of dog that is recognized by any registry as "pit bull" It is an umbrella term that covers twenty-five to thirty actual breeds. The term originated as a means to describe any dog whose owner fought it in the pit. It has expanded into a very broad, and erroneous legal usage.
Some breeds are named under "wolf-hybrid" bans or restrictions. Common theory was that all domestic dog breeds were developed from a proto-wolf ancestor. Now with the advent of the Canine Genome Project it is a fact proven by DNA that all domestic dog breeds were developed from canis familaris lupis, a sub-species of the gray wolf. Wolf-hybrid bans do, in fact, encompass all domestic breeds of dogs based upon DNA evidence.
Not one of these bans, or restrictions has made our cities, counties or municipalities safer. All dog owners should be treated equally under the law, and the public should be equally protected from all individual dogs under the law. Responsible Dog Owners of the Western States opposes breed specific legislation. RDOWS encourages the passage of Responsible Dog Owner Legislation that addresses the real problems, the irresponsible, or negligent dog owner. For a copy of RDOWS Model Dog Owner Regulations please contact any RDOWS state Director, or RDOWS.

leave the dogs alone. there is no such thing as a bad dog, only bad people. dogs are taught to do the things they do, so if you are displeased with a dogs actions so terriably that they are willing to do away with breeds then punish the owner not the dog…and not with a little slap on the wrist! we do background checks on people who wish to purchase a gun, why not on someone who wants what they call a restricted or banned breed of dog. do not punish the dog who only aims to please its master, punish the master who has taught the wrong to the dog. if you do enough research you will find at least one dog from each of thoes breeds who has either been a guide dog for the blind, a dog who has helped a handicaped person with every day chores, who has been a therapy dog, a rescue dog, a police dog, saved lives, let someone know they are about to have a seizure, ect…. so ya you go ahead and be g/d and band the dogs. but while you do band the dogs never forget all the amazing things they have done, never forget the dog who could have found your daughter..son..mother..father..ect when no one else could and saved their live, and never forget the dog who was left outside chained to a tree in the cold, in the heat, starved, scared, and feeling all alone in the world who could have been sent to rehab but instead you punished cause out of fear he/she felt that once they were free out of that environment they had to defend themselves out of total and uter fear by putting the dog down and banding his race instead of punishing the ass who did that to the poor dog, or never forget the pit bull who thought they had a loving, caring family who would protect them from harm who instead through complete and total torture has taught them that either fight to kill or you die cause you are worth nothing (remember a dog will always aim to please its master always), but this time is it to please or is it out of total fear? Punish the poor little innocent puppy who was used as bait to teach the dog who has and still is totally tortured to fight, but only slap the human on the wrist. What would you do if someone took a member of your family and kicked them, shocked them, hung them as bait for others to attack, beat them with clubs, kept them tied up, forced them to fight until either they died or the one they were forced to fight died, and when they lost..but were not dead..lying there in a ring in more pain then you can ever imagine were told they are no good..and were dragged out back to be shot and killed cause now they are worthless. What would you do to the person who did that to your family? Or would you punish your own race for the undescribable acts that were forced upon your family member. Or maybe at the grace of g/d they escape the horrific environment they were in, and now they need help to adjust back to society. So do you put them in rehab to help them because you are so gratefull words can’t even describe it, or do you have them killed or put in solicarity confinment in jail cause they are a danger to society. I had 4 rotties, and i now have a pit resuce who was found outside chained up with her collar inbeded in her neck so bad it required surgery to remove it, and a bit mark on the back of her head left untreated. I have always been so terrified at the thought of any of them being stolen…forget the fact that NO ONE EVER EVER WANTS TO EVEN THINK ABOUT THE THOUGHT OF SOMEONE STEALING THEIR DOG..a dog is a family member… but the idea of someone stealing my pit bull, or when my rotties where alive my rotties and the thought of what they would probably want them for is beyond unbarable. The thought alone makes my hands shake, my heart race, and brings tears to my eyes. So now that i am done here, and my dog (which spelled backwards spells god) is waiting so patiently for me, while i type this in tears i think i have made my point of view crystal clear.
Pit Bull, Bull S**t! This is crazy, and I’m personaly getting sick of legislation on everything! They should be protecting our freedoms but instead happering them.
Mastiffs particulary are gental and excellent companions. To Restrict the obtainment of such a breeds got me red hot.
sblake
Ridiculous! I have owned Saint Bernards for years, and have never bitten once(including strangers) I would personally NEVER trust my Saints to be guard dogs… they’ll walk right up to them and start acting friendly.
BSL has to go! And they need to ban the ownership of dogs from IRRESPONSIBLE OWNERS! And there should be harsher sentences for the ones who train them viciously(INCLUDING DOG FIGHTERS)
In what state/county/city are Boston Terrier and Pugs banned??? Have people completely gone mad?
I have a Catahoula Leopard Dog and i cannot imagine one dang reason to ban the breed at all! they are protective yes, but not bred to be human aggressive (as NO dog breed is raised to be!)…how silly.
Might as well ban poodles! What the heck is this country coming to?

This is so funny it’s sad. People, legislators, just seem to have not enough on thier hands to keep them busy. Maybe go pay attention to things that make sense, like fixing the economic issues, dealing with global warming (no real such thing), but stay out of non issues.
Punish those that teach thier dogs to bite. Punish those that deglict thier animals.
I’ve been bitten several time by dogs. Goes hand in hand with being a vets assisant. NOT ONE OF THE DOGS THAT BIT ME, ARE ON THIS LIST. An not one time was it the dogs fault.
I am with Cuthahotha and all the above. I have had Great Danes and not one has ever done anything but want to play and love humans. I had kid come knock on my door to ask if they can come out and play. This is so stupid it defies understanding. We need real info so we can lobby to stop this stupidity.
I own 2 Akitas and a Saint Bernard, and NEVER have they done anything to anyone, even when my children (10,8,6,2 and 2 months) have picked on them, slept on them or pulled food right out of their mouths, I truelly believe that how a dog acts is related solely to how it was raised, nothing to do with what breed it is, I have one Akita that I have raised since she was 9 weeks old, she is the most laid back dog in the world, but her sister (which was raised by my sister) was seriously neglected and unsocialized, she turned out to be nice to people but aggressive to all other animals, they were both from the same litter but it just goes to show it is all in how they are raised and what they are exposed to as puppies
